Public event in Brussels: 5th anniversary of the forced disappearance of 43 students in Mexico. Join our action!

  • Event Date: 19.09.19
  • Event Time: 15:42:00
On September 23d, the German Network for Human Rights in Mexico, the World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) and Amnesty International Belgique Francophone invite you to commemorate the enforced disappearance of the 43 students from Ayotzinapa.

Five years have passed since they disappeared, but time won’t stop us. Until the truth is known and justice is done, we will continue to make our voices heard.

For the 43 students, but also for the 40,000 people still missing in Mexico: Yo Con La Verdad.

"Memory, truth and justice for the 43 of Ayotzinapa and for the more than 40,000 disappeared."

The commemorative action, which will take place on Monday 23 September at 6 p.m. at Place du Luxembourg, seeks to remind the authorities that, despite the efforts made to progress on the case, families still expect students to be found and those responsible for all disappearances to be brought to justice.

Further information

On September 26, 2014, 80 students from the Rural Normal School of Ayotzinapa traveled by bus to Iguala, in the State of Guerrero, to participate in a demonstration. They ended up coming face to face with the police and armed men. Three students and three other people were killed, several people were seriously injured and one of them is still in coma 5 years later.

Forty-three students were arbitrarily arrested and taken to police vehicles. The students are still missing.

After years of inertia, the new president's administration created a special federal commission to investigate the case of the 43 Ayotzinapa students, an action that families and organizations had long demanded.

This commission is responsible for coordinating the efforts of all federal entities to shed light on these disappearances and do justice in this case.

The families of the students, the organisations and Amnesty International all recognise the efforts made to move the case forward. However, it is also important to recognise that more than 40,000 people are still missing in Mexico and that this phenomenon has not stopped.

Families still hope that the students will be found and that those responsible for all disappearances will be brought to justice.
