Turkmenistan: update on the case of Gherasimov

The International Secretariat of OMCT requests your URGENT intervention in the following situation in Turkmenistan.

New Information

The International Secretariat of OCMT has received further information from the Kyrgyz Committee for Human Rights (KCHR), a member of the network, confirming that Mr Nikolai Nikolaevich Gherasimov is currently detained in a special colony located in Akdash village, near the town of Krasnovodsk (Turkmenbashi).

According to the information received, Mr Gherasimov was arrested in July 2000. He stood trial on 17th October 2000 on charges of fraud. He was sentenced to five years following a short trial. The exact nature of the charges against him are unknown. Mr Gherasimov is a journalist working for the Azerbaijani Information Agency and for the newspapers Akhal Durmushi and Neytralniy Turkmenistan, as well as the recently closed union paper, Khalk Sesi.

OMCT is gravely concerned for Mr Gherasimov’s physical and psychological integrity.

Action requested

Please write to the authorities in Turkmenistan urging them to:

i. take all necessary measures to guarantee the physical and psychological integrity of Mr Nikolai Nikolaevich Gherasimov and order his immediate release;

ii. guarantee the respect of human rights and the fundamental freedoms throughout the country in accordance with national laws and international human rights standards.
