Call for Sustained UN Accountability Mechanisms on Iran during the 58th Human Rights Council Session

Mr President,
For the past two years, the Islamic Republic of Iran failed to meaningfully address the demands for equality and justice that sparked the 2022 protests. Continued repression, arbitrary detention, disappearance and killings, particularly of women and girls, remain deeply concerning.
The work of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on the Islamic Republic of Iran has been crucial in documenting violations, identifying perpetrators, and demanding truth and reparations for victims. Holding the Islamic Republic of Iran accountable for its crimes is essential—not only for the violations committed in response to the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement but also for the systemic repression it has carried out since its establishment in 1979.
We call on this Council not only to renew the mandate of the Special Rapporteur but also to ensure the continuation of an international independent investigative mechanism with a broad and robust mandate. Such a mechanism must build on the work of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission, enabling the investigation, collection, and preservation of evidence of serious human rights violations—both past and ongoing—to advance accountability efforts.
Thank you
