External consultancy support for the organisation of the Global Week Against Torture 2025

I. The OMCT

The World Organisation Against Torture (Organisation Mondiale Contre la Torture - OMCT in the French acronym) works with around 200 member organisations which constitute its SOS-Torture Network, to end torture, fight impunity and protect human rights defenders worldwide. Together, we make up the largest global group actively standing up to torture in more than 90 countries. By helping local voices be heard, we support our vital partners in the field and provide direct assistance to victims. Our international secretariat is based in Geneva, with offices in Brussels and Tunis.

Information about the OMCT and its activities can be found on the OMCT’s website, as well as the OMCT’s social media outlets on Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn.

II. The Global Week Against Torture

Every four years, the OMCT holds its General Assembly. In the framework of the 2025 General Assembly, the OMCT together with the SOS-Torture Network will organize from 23 to 27 June 2025 the online Global Week Against Torture. Its aim is to build momentum by organizing a full week of online webinars and meetings, uniting activists, experts, survivors and victims of torture, human rights defenders and other stakeholders, like NPMs, journalists, academics and the donor community. This initiative will foster knowledge-sharing, amplify voices, reinforce our collective strength to defend the universality of human rights—including the absolute right to be free from torture and other ill-treatment—and advocate for legal and policy change while engaging the public in the fight against torture.

The Global Week Against Torture was first launched by the OMCT four years ago in March 2021. It proved to be a vital moment for solidarity, peer-learning, advocacy and mobilization. At the height of COVID, it attracted more than 800 participants from local and international member and partner organizations. It provided a forum of more than 20 workshops and meeting spaces on topics related to the fight against torture. It also offered spaces to discuss best practices on psycho-social care. Additionally, it set a new agenda for the OMCT to develop global work through a Global Index on Torture and reinforced work to protect human rights defenders in and from detention, all as collective programs with its SOS Torture Network.

This year, the OMCT will draw on the collaboration with the United Against Torture Consortium (UATC), its progressive practices and the unique expertise of its partners. The UATC is an EU-funded project that brings together the strengths and expertise of six international anti-torture organisations, in collaboration with over 200 civil society organisations and other partners in more than 100 countries. Together, they aim to strengthen and expand efforts in torture prevention, protection, rehabilitation, and strategic litigation.
